Self-Assessment Surveys & Supplementary Material Taken from Marjorie Rosenberg, Methodology in Communicative Business Activities (another of the books I use) With the permission of öbv&hpt Publishers, Vienna, Austria There are several different types of learners in our classes. In order to find out more about them as well as to determine our own learning styles, several self-assessment surveys as an introduction to the communicative activities have been included in her book. The first assessment is designed to determine if learners are more global or more analytic in their cognitive perception of information. An explanation of the main characteristics of the two cognitive styles follows. The second surveys focus on the visual, auditory and kinaesthetic modalities of individuals. For pupils, the kinaesthetic area includes both emotional and motorist strengths. For adults, the emotional and motoric have been broken into two parts. Explanations of these surveys and tips for teaching the different learner types follow as well. In addition, the activities have been marked with indications for both the cognitive style of perception and the modality in which learners process and store information. This should help the trainer decide which type of game to use with different learners and/or different groups. To expand the knowledge of both the trainer and the learners, there is a list of behavioural indications of different learner types, vocabulary which indicates if we are thinking in visual, auditory or kinaesthetic channels and an explanation of the eye movements which NLP experts have determined indicate how we are thinking at the moment. So these self-assessments are designed to help us gain more understanding of our own preferred learning and teaching styles as well as to make our learners more aware of their special strengths and to help them gain understanding for those whose learning styles are different from their own.
